But what inspired our name, and how did we become a solid favourite?
The Meaning Behind Verdicchio
Our name is drawn from the Verdicchio grape, a celebrated white wine variety from Italy’s Marche region, cultivated for over 600 years. The name comes from verde (Italian for “green”), reflecting the grape’s distinctive green-gold hue.
Verdicchio wines are known for their bright citrus notes and subtle almond finish, making them an excellent match for seafood, pasta, and Mediterranean dishes. It was only fitting that we chose a name that embodies both fine wine and the essence of Mediterranean dining.
A Journey That Began in 2000
When Verdicchio opened with Montecasino in November 2000, we set out to create something special—a place where guests could enjoy the best of Mediterranean hospitality, thoughtfully crafted dishes, and an expertly curated wine selection.
More than two decades later, our commitment remains unchanged. With over 300 local and international wines, Verdicchio has become a go-to destination for wine pairing in Johannesburg, where guests can explore the interplay of food and wine in an intimate and inviting setting.
Tubby’s Vision – The Heart Behind Verdicchio
Verdicchio was founded by Tubby, a man whose passion for hospitality shaped everything we stand for today. He believed that great food and wine should be shared, enjoyed, and never rushed. His attention to detail and dedication to creating an unforgettable atmosphere made Verdicchio more than just a restaurant—it became a place where guests felt at home.
Though Tubby is no longer with us, his legacy continues. His philosophy lives on through the warmth of our service, the care in every dish we prepare, and the joy that comes from gathering around a table with good food and even better company.
